Isang Litrong Liwanag turns your 1.5L softdrink (PET) bottles into solar bulbs instead of ending up clogging the drains.
Spearheaded by Ilac Diaz of the My Shelter Foundation, who also brought us 1.5 and 2L bottles as alternative to hollow blocks for building sturdy shelters and schools, the Isang Litrong Liwanag project aims to provide an alternative source of daylight to a million houses by year 2012.
It can also help conserve energy by turning to solar power and prevent fires caused by unattended candles.

The solar bulbs can pack in at least 55watts of power to light up a house, and for a tropical country like ours…this is perfect. At least we can put those PET bottles and the scorching heat of the sun to good use!
Save those bottles and drop them off at the back of Insular Life Building in Alabang or Makati. Even a little goes a long way. It’s time to Be Green!
How to make a Solar Bulb
* Fill a 1.5 liter clear soft drink bottle with purified water as tap water will produce moss in the future.
* Add 3 tablespoons of liquid bleach.
* Tightly seal the cap.
* Make a hole in the roof and insert the bottom part of the bottle leav…ing it exposed under the sunlight.
* Seal roof with sealant to prevent raindrops from getting inside the house.
*Change water after 5 years…

I believe it’s meant as morning light lang po. They featured it in TV Patrol kanina, Manila will start placing then in houses sa Baseco compound na daw. It can save as much as Php400 according to Meralco. Not bad for a coke bottle, some water and bleach!

Hi Aldrin…I’m not sure because in Brazil, they just use tap water. the reason for not using tap water is so it doesn’t collect moss, I don’t think it makes any difference in the lighting capability.
